Description

The war memorial, located on The Headrow in Leeds, was built in 1922 and restored in 1992. It was sculpted by Henry C Fahr and designed by J E Proctor to commemorate the First and Second World Wars. The memorial features marble octagonal steps, a plinth, and a squat obelisk adorned with carvings of owls, wreaths, and flags. On the north side, there is a bronze figure representing Peace, while the south side depicts War, featuring St George and the Dragon. The original bronze angel was replaced in 1992 by Ian Judd and Andy Elton. The memorial was moved to its current location from City Square in 1937, where it now stands at the east end of J E Proctor's Garden of Rest. It was initially topped with a bronze figure of Victory, which was removed in 1967.
