Description
28, 29, and 30 Park Row is a bank and chambers built around 1925, with alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and has a slate roof. It stands four storeys tall with an attic, situated on an island site. The facade features five bays facing Park Row, with canted corner bays, and three bays on the returns along Bedford Street to the north and Greek Street to the south. The corners are highlighted by vermiculated rustication, and the ground floor is rusticated.
There are corner entrances adorned with fluted columns, an entablature, and a plaque displaying the bank's emblem. The tall windows on the ground floor have scrolled keystones, while the upper floors feature recessed flat-arched windows with moulded architraves. Cast-iron grilles are present on the central and corner first-floor windows, and fielded plaques are located between the second-floor windows. Additional architectural details include a sill band, a moulded string course, and an eaves cornice, with the fourth storey set back. Dormer windows can be seen in the roof slope. On the left return, there is a narrow two-window entrance bay on the far left, which has double doors and rails topped with pointed trident finials.
The building was first mentioned in Kelly's Directory in 1927 as the Bank of Liverpool and Martins Ltd, managed by F.W. Tidswell. The Bank of Liverpool Chambers included eleven sets of offices, including one for the caretaker. By 1930, the entry listed it as Martin's Bank.
