Description
9 East Parade is a Grade II listed office building constructed around 1870. It features ashlar stonework and has three storeys plus a basement, with three two-window bays. Access is via steps leading up to panelled double doors with an overlight on the left, framed by a segmental arch supported by carved capitals on attached columns and pilasters. The ground and first floors have arcaded windows with moulded round arches and carved capitals on the pilaster shafts. Above the ground floor, there is an entablature adorned with a carved frieze of scrolls and bearded heads, along with carved scrolls and a plaque over the first-floor windows. The second-floor windows have shouldered heads, with pilaster shafts that also feature carved capitals. A heavy modillion cornice with lion heads decorates the end pilasters, and there is an arcaded parapet with urns and a central panel that reads 'ESTABLISHED/ 1840', topped by a statue of Britannia and a lion. The interior has not been inspected. The earliest directory entry for this building dates to 1872, listing it as the office of the County Fire and Provident Life Association, along with a cloth merchant, a solicitor, and architect William Wilks.
