Description
The Clock Tower at St. George's Hospital is a clock and water tower with an attached chimney, built in the late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features part timber framing, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The tower has two stages. The lower stage is battered and features giant, round-arched, blind arcading that rises from a band, with imposts and a cornice above. The arches are narrow, and on the west side, there are windows at three levels. The top of the first stage is stepped, and above it is a cantilevered balcony supported by brackets, surrounding the timber-framed second stage. This upper stage has a central clock face on three sides and a deep cornice that rises over the clock faces. The tower is capped with a pyramidal roof featuring a finial, and on the fourth side, there is a tapering brick stack that rises above the tower, complete with offsets, bands, and a swept cap. The boilerhouse buildings and outbuildings at the base of the tower are not of special interest.
