Description

This chest tomb, dating from around 1723, is a memorial to Elizabeth, the late wife of John Stable of Stank, who died on 19th February 1723 at the age of 48, and their son James, who died on 10th March 1723 at the age of 14. It is constructed from ashlar and is located approximately 30 metres south of the south porch of the Church of All Saints. The tomb is set on a hollowed chamfered plinth and features three false raised-and-fielded panels on the long sides and a single panel on the ends. The top of the tomb displays fine lettering within a decorative border, which includes hour-glasses at the base, a channelled border with an arched head, imposts carved with crossed bones, a keystone adorned with a skull, and spandrels featuring winged heads.
