Description

Shann Cottage and Shann House, located on Bridleway Number 48 in Rothwell, are two dwellings that date back to the early 18th century, incorporating parts of an earlier timber-framed structure. The exterior is primarily brick covered with white-painted render, with sandstone at the rear and a roof made of composition tiles. The building has a T-plan layout, featuring an 18th-century three-unit front range and an earlier rear wing. It stands two storeys tall with seven bays that are nearly symmetrical. The first floor has a band, and there are vertical rectangular openings on both floors, including a central glazed door and 2-light casements with overlights containing 12 small panes. A ridge chimney is located at the junction of the second and third units, and there is a gable chimney at the left end. The rear wing is constructed of coursed squared sandstone at the ground floor, with rubble above, and includes a 19th-century addition in the rear left corner that houses a staircase.

Inside, a partition wall between the axial passage and the rear wing features two wall posts and an interrupted rail with peg-holes for studs. A 17th-century-style dog-leg staircase rises from this passage, characterized by a closed string, square newels, turned balusters, and a broad moulded handrail, which is believed to be a 19th-century addition. There are also some remnants of timber frame construction, such as a wall-plate, located on the first floor of the right-hand end of the front range. The central hall displays bolection-moulded panels, along with a moulded plaster cornice and beams that have later foliated decoration applied. The interior of the rear wing, which serves as the other dwelling, has not been inspected.
