Description

This is a former Rectory, now a house, dating from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It is constructed of stretcher bond brick, with random, interspersed headers, and has a continuous, chamfered brick plinth with stone offsets. A stone cavetto-moulded string course runs between the first and second storeys, changing to a double-stretcher course on the rear elevation. The house has a rectangular plan with a 2-span, hipped stone slate roof and gable end stacks.

The front elevation is a symmetrical facade of two storeys and five bays. A central 6-panel door is reached by stone steps flanked by curved, solid stone balustrades with chamfered coping. All windows are 20-pane sashes in plain wooden casements, set in flat arches and with stone sills. The rear elevation has a symmetrical arrangement of windows, with a central 30-pane sash staircase window illuminating the half-landing above the first storey; a small, fixed 9-pane light sits between the 15-pane sashes. Evidence of early bricking up of openings is visible on the second storey, along with an inserted 16-pane horizontal sliding sash to the right of the staircase window. A rear cellar is lit by simple square openings in the plinth. An altered entrance on the right has five stone steps. The gable ends have scattered and altered fenestration; the east gable retains an original 9-pane fixed light in the first storey, which contains the original crown glass mullions.

The interior has been extensively renovated, with many original features concealed, but it retains the original central staircase, a western servants' stair, wooden panelling, round-arched, fan-lit hall entrances, and brick vaulted rear cellars. The roof retains original scissor braces, principal rafters and purlins, and shows evidence of a former attic storey adapted as servants' quarters. A stone wall boundary defines the property’s garden and is included in the listing. Stables and rear outbuildings are of no special interest.
