Description
The four lamp posts known as 'Morn' were created in 1903 by Alfred Drury and are located in City Square, Leeds. Each lamp post features a polished granite plinth with a bronze life-size statue on a square base. The bases are inscribed with the lettering: 'MORN/ THE GIFT OF T. WALTER HARDING 1903'; 'ALF. DRURY ARA Sc'; and 'J.W.SINGER & SONS FOUNDERS'. The statues depict nude female figures holding flowers and drapery, with the right arm raised to hold a torch, although the torch is not original. These figures, representing 'Morn', were originally placed on the balustrade to flank the entrances to the square, where they held tall lamps with glass ball shades. This installation is part of the lighting scheme for City Square, which was designed by William Bakewell for T. Walter Harding in 1903. The lamp posts match another group known as 'Even'.
