Description
The Statue of Dean Hook, located in City Square, Leeds, was created in 1902 by the sculptor F.W. Pomeroy. It features a polished granite plinth with a bronze plaque that has raised lettering stating: 'Dr HOOK/ VICAR OF LEEDS/ 1837-1859'. The life-size bronze statue stands on a square base, which also has raised lettering that reads: 'THE GIFT OF/ T WALTER HARDING/ 1903' along with the sculptor's name.
Historically, the Reverend Dr. Walter Farquhar Hook played a significant role in developing a new liturgical and pastoral mission for the Church of England within an urban community and was responsible for rebuilding Leeds Parish Church of St Peter, which was consecrated in 1841. T. Walter Harding, who funded the statue, owned the Tower Works on Globe Road and financed the construction of City Square, designed by William Bakewell. The statue is one of four that stood on a balustrade facing out of the square towards the Post Office.
