Description

The Statue of Joseph Priestley, located in City Square, Leeds, was created in 1903 by Drury. It features a polished granite plinth and a bronze plaque with raised lettering that reads 'JOSEPH/ PRIESTLEY/ 1733-1804'. The base of the statue also has raised lettering stating 'THE GIFT OF/ T. WALTER HARDING 1903'. This life-size statue commemorates one of four notable citizens of Leeds, as part of the City Square layout designed by William Bakewell for T. Walter Harding in 1902. Originally, the statues faced out of the square and were positioned on a balustraded parapet that included elaborate lamp standards.
