Description
Four lamp posts, known as 'Even', were created in 1903 by Alfred Drury. They feature polished granite plinths with bronze life-size figures on square bases. The bases include inscriptions that read: 'EVEN/ THE GIFT OF T. WALTER HARDING 1903'; 'ALF. DRURY ARA Sc'; and 'J.W.SINGER & SONS FOUNDERS'. The figures are nude female representations draped in clothing, with their left arms raised to support a torch, although the torch is not original. These lamp posts are part of the lighting scheme for City Square, designed by William Bakewell for T. Walter Harding in 1903. Originally, the figures stood on the balustrade flanking the entrances to the square, holding tall lamps with glass ball shades. They complement the group known as 'Morn'.
