Description

The building is a former railway company office, cinema, and night club, constructed around 1935 by architects W Curtis Green and WH Hamlyn for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company. It is designed in Stripped Classical style and features a steel frame with a Portland stone ashlar facade, while the rear and sides are finished in brown brick. The structure stands seven storeys tall, with a plain recessed cinema facade on the left, ten paired windows facing City Square, and eight paired windows along with a four-window projecting block on Aire Street. The entrance to the station concourse rises through two storeys on the City Square side, featuring drum columns in antis and a shallow moulding above a flat arch, flanked by plain shop windows with late 20th-century fittings. A stone plaque with a coat of arms is located at the centre of the fifth storey. The cinema entrance on the left has glass double doors topped by an obelisk above a plain lintel. The office entrance on Aire Street features panelled double doors within a keyed architrave, surmounted by a carved crest adorned with roses and thistles. The interior of the concourse entrance includes pilasters with lamp motifs and an inner lobby, while the cinema, now a night club, has not been seen. This building is part of the significant group of structures associated with the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, including the nearby Queen's Hotel.
