Description
The War Memorial in Pudsey was built around 1921 by the architects Brierly and Rutherford from York, with a sculpture by Henry Poole from London. This tall cenotaph is made of Portland stone and features a bronze statue on top. It is accessed by a flight of three shallow steps and has a plinth and base adorned with bronze plaques listing the names of those who fell in the wars.
The memorial has recessed channelled quoins and long rectangular panels on each side, each topped with a bronze wreath. The front tablet is inscribed with the words: "THIS MONUMENT COMMEMORATES THE NAMES OF THE MEN OF PUDSEY WHOSE LIVES WERE SACRIFICED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 AND IN THE WAR 1939-1945." The rear tablet states: "ERECTED ON THE SITE OF THE ANCIENT CHAPEL OF EASE OF ALL SAINTS WHICH WAS TAKEN DOWN IN 1879."
Above the cornice, there is a smaller plinth that supports the statue of a soldier dressed in the battledress of the First World War. The memorial is prominently located at the junction of two roads in the center of the town.
