Description

The Old Vicarage is a house, originally built as a vicarage in the 1840s. It was constructed in 1846 for the Rev. John Daniel, who served at St. Michael's Church from 1844 to 1875. The house is built of large dressed stone with a Welsh blue-slate roof and is in a Vernacular Revival style. It is two storeys and has an attic.

The front facade is symmetrical with three bays. The central bay projects to form a porch, which has a pointed-arched doorway with a hoodmould bearing initialled and dated stops. Above the doorway is a three-light mullioned-and-transomed window with a hoodmould on the first floor, and an arched lancet window in the gable. Offset angle buttresses flank the facade, and the gable has kneelers. The outer bays have mullioned-and-transomed windows; a three-light window is on each floor to the left, and a four-light window is above to the right. The house features decorative gutter brackets. The left-hand return has a canted bay window of three transomed lights. The right-hand return, of two bays, has a flat-roofed projecting bay with a three-light chamfered window; the first floor has a three-light mullioned-and-transomed window. The second bay of the right-hand return has an oriel window of two double-chamfered lights on the first floor, topped with a coped gable and kneelers. Windows on this elevation retain decorative leaded lights. The rear of the house is in a T-shape, and has a gable stack and another at the junction with the front range. The building is included on the list for its group value.
