Description
This railway bridge, built in 1847 for the York and North Midland Railway Company, is located approximately 525 metres south-east of Walton Gates in Thorp Arch, West Yorkshire. Constructed from rock-faced gritstone with brick soffits, the bridge features a treble-span, skew-arched design that accommodates a field track over a disused railway cutting. The segmental arches are made of voussoirs that align with the courses and spring from piers with impost bands. The end piers, which are set forward, are connected by a nosed ashlar band beneath a more deeply coursed parapet topped with weathered ashlar copings. The bridge remains unaltered and original to the Church Fenton-Spofforth line, which opened on 10th August 1847 and was linked to Harrogate the following year.
