Description

Croft Holdings is a house that likely dates back to the early 17th century, with later encasement in the 18th century and alterations and extensions made in the 20th century. The building features timber framing that is now encased in stone and cement-rendered. It has a 20th-century cement-tile roof and stands two stories high. The house has a three-bay, lobby-entrance layout with aisles at the rear of the second and third bays, and a 20th-century wing at the rear of the first bay. A 20th-century porch is located to the right of the second bay, beneath an exposed section of a wall post. Another exposed wall post separates the first and second bays. Each bay has 20th-century three-light casement windows, with the window in the third bay on the first floor being smaller. The wall plate is exposed over the first and second bays, and there are corbelled brick kneelers at each end. The right side of the building reveals exposed tie-beam and wall-plate ends that are morticed for corner posts. The interior has not been inspected, but a survey by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHM) notes two arcade posts with one surviving curved brace to the arcade plate, as well as a spine beam and common joists in the first bay that have 17th-century characteristics. The roof is a light-scantling, common-rafter type with halved collars. The survey raises questions about whether the house was originally an open hall with floored end bays or if it was built as a two-story structure throughout in the 17th century.
