Description
East Street Mills is a flax mill, later used as factories and workshops, dating to circa 1825, with subsequent extensions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with slate and tile roofs, and includes a tall brick principal chimney. It is laid out in an L-shape, with additional ranges forming a courtyard. The main ranges are four storeys high, while others are two storeys. The earlier range on the right has a five-window front to East Street, largely featuring sash windows. On the left end are two tall recessed blank arches, the lower rising through two storeys. Behind this is the principal chimney. Extending to the rear is a 13-window range, comprising 23 windows externally, mostly with wooden cross windows. This range was extended in the mid-19th century and continues around the rear of the site in a similar 16-window range, complemented by a 13-window range facing the yard. A cross-wing, three windows wide by seven windows, with mainly three-light wood mullion and transom windows, sits across the end of this section. Several lower ranges extend forward from the cross-wing towards East Street, including a two-storey range of nine cross-windows facing the yard, with a central doorway on each floor, and a two-storey, one-bay range with a seven-window front to East Street. The interior of the earlier range on the right features cast-iron framing with cruciform-plan columns, brick vaults, while the rear range has a similar structure but with round columns. The site was purchased by Moses Atkinson, a flax spinner, in 1825, who rebuilt the pre-existing mills. The main ranges are depicted on the 1847 Ordnance Survey map.
