Description
The Bowling Green Hotel, located at 1 Bondgate, dates back to 1480 and is a stone-built structure with a stone slate roof. It stands two stories tall and features five windows across its width. A wide, plain string course runs along the first-floor window cills, which are part of the cills themselves. Above the central doorway is a plain Venetian window. The building has two stacks at the gable ends, one of which has a well-moulded chimney. Notably, there are no glazing bars on the windows, and the front elevation has been painted.
On the first floor of the west gable, there is a doorway that has been walled up. This doorway is topped with a pediment that is lettered and dated with "N A" over "1755." There is no evidence of a former external stone staircase leading to this doorway, and the jambs of the doorway have been removed.
The Bowling Green Hotel is part of a group that includes Nos 10 to 34 (even) and 38 to 44 (even).
