Description

The stable block, located approximately 50 metres east of Ledston Hall, dates from the 17th century and was designed by William Thornton. It is constructed from magnesian limestone and features a stone slate roof. The building has an H-plan layout and is two storeys high with a symmetrical design. A drip course runs around the entire structure.

In the centre, there is a round-headed doorway with altered doors, featuring a prominent semicircular head made of gauged voussoirs within a raised outer band that interrupts the drip course. Close to the angle of each wing, there are smaller doors. The ground floor has four cross-windows, and above the left-hand door, there is an additional window. The first floor includes five 2-light mullioned windows and a smaller window at each end. Each wing has a door and a transomed window on the ground floor, a mullioned window on the first floor, and their gables feature one cross-window at ground level and two above, all with a drip band above. The gable copings have non-projecting kneelers and apex chimneys.

The return walls of the wings have cross-gables matching the main range, with less regular window arrangements, particularly on the first floor, including a cross-window in the west gable. The rear of the building resembles the front, except for the ground floor of the main range, which is mostly blind.
