Description
3 and 4 Alma Cottages are a pair of cottages built around 1860 in the Gothic Revival style. They are constructed from coursed squared gritstone and topped with a slate roof. The cottages are one and a half storeys high and consist of three bays, with the central bay featuring a gable. The facade facing the road has cross-framed windows set in rusticated surrounds. There are arched entrances on the left and right sides, with what is likely the original four-panel door to No. 3. Notable features include a small stone-roofed bay window and a two-light window in the gable above. The eaves and roof are elaborately detailed, featuring deep carved wooden eaves brackets, fish-scale slates, crested ridge tiles, and two large four-flue corniced ridge stacks, some topped with tall crenellated chimney pots. The interior has not been inspected. These cottages are part of a group of four pairs built on a narrow strip of land, which is shown on the 1850 Ordnance Survey map. The 1872 Directory indicates that George Brown and John Abbott, both gardeners, were the occupants, likely working for the owners of the nearby Alma Road house.
