Description
The gazebo, or observatory, is located approximately 100 metres north of Clumpcliffe Farmhouse and is dated 1708, as indicated on the rainwater heads. It was built for the Savile family of the former Methley Hall and is possibly the work of Theophilus Shelton. The structure is made of handmade red brick in stretcher bond, with sandstone dressings, and features stone slate and lead roofs.
The gazebo has a rectangular plan and consists of one and two storeys, with four bays arranged symmetrically and facing north. The design includes a flat-roofed, two-storey, two-bay centre that rises between single-storey outer bays with hipped roofs. Sandstone pilaster-strips are located at the outer corners, and the upper storey has rusticated long-and-short quoins. A first-floor band runs around the building.
Access is via five modern steps leading to a doorway in the centre, which has a stone architrave and cornice. On each side of the doorway, there are two vertical rectangular windows with raised stone surrounds and gauged brick heads. The window to the right of the door contains an 8-pane sash, while the others are blocked with sheeting. The upper part of a lead downspout, decorated with swags, can be seen on each side of the upper storey, and the rainwater heads are also decorated, featuring raised lettering "JS" on the left and "1 7 (right) 0 8".
Additional architectural features include a modillioned cornice, the remains of a wooden balustrade, an octagonal lantern with an ogee cap and ball finial, and two turrets at the rear. The rear of the gazebo has four windows and a central door, all with raised stone surrounds and a cornice.
