Description
Spring House is a house built around 1864, with later extensions added to the rear and a restoration completed in the late 20th century. The garden front is made of ashlar, while the rest of the building is constructed from brick, topped with a slate roof. The house has an L-plan layout with a rear wing, built in 1:6 English garden wall bond. It stands two storeys high over a basement and features three windows across its front. Access is provided by four bull-nosed stone steps leading to a central four-panelled door, which has glazed panels in the top two sections and is framed by a stone pilastered surround with a cornice and entablature. The windows are four-pane sash types, with renewed frames and stone sills. The hipped roof has end stacks made of white brick, adorned with a dentilled cornice.
Inside, there is a narrow entrance hall that features a staircase with two straight flights, turned newels, and a ramped handrail. The front rooms contain contemporary-style fireplaces made of white marble, along with shutters and panelled window reveals in the front right room. The former kitchen located at the rear right has original cupboards and panelled doors. In the basement, beneath the kitchen, there is a kitchen/scullery that likely contains the original cast-iron range, marked with the maker's name 'HEAPS & ROBINSON LEEDS'. There are also flanking corner set pots and a slop stone positioned below the basement window. Historical records indicate that the house was originally owned by the Sagar family of Red Hall, Shadwell. This property is included for its group value.
