Description
Numbers 36, 37, and 38 are three houses, now used as offices, located in Park Square, likely built between 1815 and 1831. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings and feature a slate roof and wrought-iron railings. The buildings are two storeys high with a basement and added dormers, presenting a façade with three, four, and two windows respectively.
Each entrance is accessed by stone steps leading to panelled doors with fanlights. The doorways for numbers 37 and 38 are flanked by Tuscan columns that support an entablature, cornice, and a stone band that continues at the first-floor level. The doorway for number 36 has console brackets supporting its entablature and cornice. The windows feature flat rubbed-brick arches and sash frames with glazing bars on the first floor. The central section of the façade has recessed panels below two ground-floor and four first-floor windows, topped by a parapet with four carved stone panels depicting festoons of drapery and flanking scrolls. The railings are plain.
At the rear, the buildings are reputed to have three single-storey elliptical bays and round-headed stair windows. Inside, it is said that the staircases have cast-iron balustrades, with numbers 37 and 38 featuring elliptical bay windows. The front room of these houses includes a moulded cornice, an elliptical archway, and a fireplace supported by Tuscan columns. This development is noted as one of the last in Park Square, built on land leased from the Wilson estate.
