Description

High Farm Public House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the 17th century, was rebuilt around 1725, extended to the rear around 1816, and altered around 1976. The building was associated with the Kirke family, and the 1725 rebuild was for Robert Midgley. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone with a stone slate roof.

The structure has two storeys and three bays, featuring quoins. The entrance, located to the left of centre, has stepped roll moulding on the quoined jambs, which continues across the lintel in a decorative wavy line shaped like an 'M'. The windows are recessed and have chamfered mullions, although the central mullions have been removed and replaced with plate-glass windows. There are remnants of cyma-moulded kneelers, and the gable copings have been removed. The building has stepped external end stacks and a ridge stack between the second and third bays, all of which are corniced and raised with banded tops. On the left return, there is a rear wing that is two storeys high with two bays and flat-faced mullioned windows.

Inside, between the second and third bays, there is an altered fireplace that features an original stone surround with cyma and roll moulding. To the right, a re-set door lintel has a carved recessed panel with raised letters that read 'RK (1)6?78'.
