Description
Harehills Middle School, formerly known as Gipton Board School, was built in 1897 by architect W.S. Braithwaite. This board school is constructed of red brick with ashlar and carved stone details, topped with a slate roof. It stands three storeys high over a basement and features eight bays arranged in two groups. The building is designed in the Renaissance Revival style, showcasing a symmetrical facade with entrances located in the projecting bays two and seven. The entrance includes a recessed doorway with a round-arched porch, flanked by paired fluted pilasters, and is adorned with a keystone and brackets supporting a deep entablature that features recessed panels, a cornice, and a pediment. Above the entrance, there is a tall segmental-arched stair window, and the facade includes a blind arcade and a pyramid roof with a small cupola. The windows are a mix of segmental and flat arches, with transoms and mullions on the first floor. The central two bays are highlighted by ornate Dutch-style gables topped with ball finials. Semicircular pediments are found over bays one and seven, as well as on the right return, and the building is capped with an arcaded parapet. The interior has not been inspected.
