Description

This is a group of shops, workshops, and offices dating from circa 1900. The building is located on Central Road, with additional frontages at 119, 120, and 121 Kirkgate. Constructed of red brick with a tile roof, it comprises three storeys and an attic, with twelve bays facing Central Road, three bays facing Kirkgate on the left return, and three bays with rear access on the right return.

The architectural style is Queen Anne Revival. The ground floor retains its original shop front, characterised by giant tile-faced pilasters and brackets topped with obelisks between the first-floor windows, although the original signage has been replaced. The first floor features five bays with three windows each on the west side, incorporating six multi-pane segmental-arched windows, and one bay with three windows. The second floor is similarly detailed. The attic includes small-paned gable windows and dormers topped with triangular pediments. The shop divisions extend upwards as brick pilasters to a ramped parapet finished with ball finials, with a brick band at the second-floor level.

The left return has three-, three-, and two-window bays, with two gables and a dormer window featuring a triangular pediment. The right return features eight first-floor windows, and a round-arched access to the rear with fine wrought-iron gates.

The interior has not been inspected. The building was constructed by 1910 on land previously occupied by the Central Market of 1824, located on the corner of Duncan Street and New Market Street, which was cleared after 1886.
