Description

No. 110 Kirkgate is a building that was originally the London and Midland Bank and is now the Trustee Savings Bank. It was constructed in 1892 by architect William Bakewell. The building is made of ashlar stone and has two storeys with three bays. It is designed in a classical style featuring paired Corinthian pilasters that support a moulded entablature, dentils, and a modillion cornice on each floor. The central entrance is round-arched, and the windows on the first floor have two-light tracery. A central balustraded blocking course displays the word 'BANK' beneath a large triangular pediment, which is topped by a draped female statue flanked by a lion and a unicorn at the corners.

Inside, there is a lofty banking hall with a canted wooden entrance lobby, original security shutters, and panelled wainscoting. William Bakewell designed this building shortly after the Athenaeum Building on The Headrow and before his significant works for TW Harding at the Tower Works and City Square.
