Description

A row of five estate worker’s cottages was built in the mid-to-late 18th century by John Carr for Edwin Lascelles, 1st Lord Harewood. Part of Carr’s original model village, the cottages are constructed from punch-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. They stand two storeys high, presenting a ten-bay balanced facade. The building features an ashlar plinth, quoins, and a first-floor sill/impost band. Each bay is articulated by a giant semicircular-arched recess, which gives the impression of attached pilasters with block capitals that support the arches. Doorways are located within bays one, three, five, seven, and ten, each framed by raised monolithic jambs and lintels with tripartite keystones. The remaining bays have windows with monolithic lintels. Segmental-arched windows are set within the arches of the first floor. An eaves band runs along the top. The roof is hipped and includes four ashlar stacks.
