Description

Beech Grove House is a house that now serves as the Leeds University Department of Education. It was built in 1799 and underwent alterations in 1840 and the 20th century. The house was originally constructed for Abram Rhodes and later modified for John Ogden March. It features ashlar stonework and a slate hipped roof, with two storeys and an attic that has modern dormers. The east front has three sets of seven bays, with a central round-arched porch supported by attached columns and a moulded cornice. The flanking windows and first-floor windows are plate-glass sashes, with a sill band on the first floor and recessed rectangular panels below the outer windows, while the central window has an architrave. The left side of the house has a wide semicircular bay with three central windows, along with a sill band and panels similar to the front. There are large stone stacks on both the left and right sides of the ridge. Inside, the house is reputed to retain mid-19th century domestic features. Abram Rhodes was a prominent cloth merchant in Leeds, and his property originally included workshops, warehouses, and a malt kiln. John March was an iron founder and machine maker who collaborated with Matthew Murray.
