Description

Croft Head Farm is a house that is part of a group and dates back to the 17th century, although it underwent significant alterations in the late 18th century. The building features timber framing that likely originates from the 15th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble with quoins and has a stone slate roof. The house is two storeys high.

The main elevation displays late 18th-century openings, including a near-central doorway with a reset triangular lintel that has raised lettering: "TM 1620 WM GOD : BLESS : THIS : HOUSE AND . THEM. THAT DWELL . THERE IN." To the left of the doorway is a 3-light window, and to the right is a 2-light window, both of which have had their mullions removed. On the first floor, there are four 2-light windows. The right gable features a central projecting stack, with a 2-light double chamfered window to the left and a 3-light double chamfered window to the right on both floors, along with a tiny chamfered light. There is an outshut at the rear with a recent stone porch.

Inside, the wall between the house and the outshut is timber-framed, revealing two visible posts, an intermediate rail, and close studding. The posts are arch-braced to the arcade plate, all joined with pegs. A former doorway in the stud wall is partially blocked. At a right angle to this is part of a truss with housings on its underside for additional studding. The main room features stop-chamfered beams that are scarf-jointed where a bressumer would have been. The end bay includes a moulded fireplace surround that corresponds to the projecting stack, and there is further studding on the first floor.
