Description
This is a four-to-five-storey factory building, constructed in 1838 as part of Burdett Mill. It is built of hammer-dressed stone with a corrugated asbestos roof. The building features stone brackets supporting the gutter line. The facade contains sixteen ranges of industrial windows and two ranges of planked loading doors, with a stair tower interrupting the rhythm; this tower is topped by a cast iron water tank. An oval plaque is inscribed with the words, "The First Stone of this Building was laid by Sir Francis Burdett Bart MP April 20th 1838." Sir Francis Burdett, a formerly prominent Radical, was at the time a Conservative Member of Parliament for North Wiltshire.
