Description
The Calder and Hebble Navigation Armitage Bridge, located on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, dates from 1793 to 1798. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a depressed arch. In 1861, the bridge was widened by adding a flat iron span on the east side, which includes an iron parapet that is panelled with a diamond pattern and has "1861" in relief. This bridge is notable as one of the few remaining examples from the early phase of the canal's construction, where some bridges were built too narrow to accommodate a towpath as a cost-saving measure. Instead of a towpath, there are steps leading down to the canal bank on the east side, along with a ramp that leads up to the road.
