Description

The Paddock Railway Viaduct, built between 1845 and 1850, is a notable structure that may have been engineered by John Hawkshaw, with contractors Messrs Miller, Blackie, and Shortridge involved, as they also worked on Lockwood Viaduct. The viaduct is constructed from rock-faced stone, featuring an ashlar band and parapet coping. It has six round arches supported by very tall piers at the north end, and four box girder trusses on piers with moulded bases and imposts. At the south end, there are five round arches, two of which are blocked. Additionally, there is a flat iron span over Manchester Road, and the structure stands 70 feet high. The railway line was officially opened on 1 July 1850.
