Description
Paddock Lock 5E is a narrow pound lock located on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, built between 1794 and 1798 with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was designed by Benjamin Outram and features a chamber made of hammer dressed stone with stone copings. The lock has a single wooden head gate operated by manual iron ground paddle gearing, and double tail gates with integral gate iron paddle gearing. There is a 20th-century wooden plank and rails footbridge and 19th-century steps at the tail end. A coursed stone overflow weir is present, with a large stone cascade visible at the tail. Notably, the lock is an integral structure with the Paddock Foot Aqueduct, as the overflow weir begins within the aqueduct span. This lock is included for its group value.
