Description
Gledholt Methodist Church is a mid-19th century building constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and a hipped slate roof. It stands two storeys tall, with a ground floor that is astylar and features a moulded cornice and a continuous moulded impost band. The first floor has angle pilasters supporting a full entablature and balustrade adorned with vase-shaped balusters and piers topped with urn finials.
The façade includes five ranges of sash windows; the ground floor windows are round-arched with rusticated ashlar voussoirs and moulded keystones, while the first-floor windows have moulded surrounds and marginal glazing bars. The central three bays project forward, with the central bay further projecting and framed by paired Ionic pilasters on the first floor. Above this bay is an arch with a sculpted tympanum, moulded voussoirs, and a keystone, flanked by scrolled consoles and topped with a triangular pediment.
There are one-bay projections to the east and west. The ground floor of these projections mirrors the main ground floor, but they feature double doors with fielded panels instead of windows, and the heads of the doors are depressed rather than round-arched. The west projection is two storeys high, with a tripartite sash window with marginal glazing bars and an ashlar frame on the first floor. The east projection has a four-storey tower, each storey featuring a full entablature. The first floor has broad angle pilasters and a sash window with marginal glazing bars in a moulded frame. The second floor also has paired Ionic pilasters and a similar window, along with a moulded impost band and a balustrade with vase-shaped balusters.
The angle turrets on each side of the tower have round-arched niches and are crowned by four steep pediments. The third storey is octagonal, with each side featuring one round-arched sash window with marginal glazing bars, a keystone, and moulded voussoirs, all topped by a triangular pediment at the cornice level. The tower is capped with an octagonal lead cupola and a finial.
