Description

Midway, numbers 46 to 50, is a group of buildings dating to the 17th or early 18th century, with the remainder being 18th century. Constructed of hammer-dressed stone, the roofs are slate-covered, and number 50 has a coped gable end with moulded kneelers.

The main front of number 46 features two tripartite casements on both the ground and first floors, and a single five-light stone mullioned casement where two lights have been blocked and two mullions removed. A substantial porch is built of large ashlar masonry, incorporating a chamfered monolithic lintel, small oculi in each wall, and stone benches within. The entrance is a fine ledged oak door with iron studs and ornamental hinges, set within a chamfered surround. Number 48 has a range of casements with chamfered stone mullions, a three-light ground floor window and a first-floor window which originally had three lights, but now has one mullion centrally placed, creating two lights with sashes. Number 50 displays two ranges of three-light stone mullioned windows, with the mullions recessed within the frame. A water table of diagonally placed stone slates runs along the valley between the roofs of numbers 46 and 48.

Historically, Pond Farm, located nearby, was raided on 12 March 1812 by Luddites who suspected the presence of a power loom in Mr George Roberts’ finishing shop.
