Description

The outbuilding, garage, and principal barn located to the north of Ashes Common Farmhouse in Almondbury are notable structures dating back to at least the 17th century. The earliest part, an extension immediately north of the farmhouse, features cruck framing and hammer-dressed stone walls, likely from the 19th century. This section consists of two bays and includes a truss with butt purlins, a ridge notched into the blades, and collar and tenons below, which appear to be for a second collar. There is a cellar beneath, and until recently, a chimney on the east side suggests it was originally a dwelling.

To the north is a garage extension, which was also once a dwelling from the 18th century. This structure has hammer-dressed stone and a pitched stone slate roof, standing two storeys tall. It features modern garage doors on the ground floor and two 2-light stone mullioned windows on the first floor, although two of the lights are blocked. Inside, there is a chimney breast with a moulded stone mantel shelf from the 18th century, positioned about 5 feet above the floor.

West of the garage, aligned with the farmhouse, is the principal barn, which dates to the 18th century and possibly earlier. This barn is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and has a pitched stone slate roof, with planked barn doors. It features aisled king post trusses that are arch-braced and braced to the aisle plate.
