Description

Longley Old Hall, dating from the 17th century, is a significant building that was inaccurately restored in 1885. It is depicted on Senior's map of Almondbury Parish from 1634 and was the former residence of the Ramsden family, who were lords of the manors of Huddersfield and Almondbury until 1717. This historical connection is why it was excluded from the sale of the Ramsden Estate to Huddersfield Corporation in 1921. The hall may either replace or rebuild a medieval house, as it came into the Ramsden family by marriage in the early 16th century.

The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a hipped stone slate roof. It has two storeys and four gables that were added during the 1885 restoration. On the first floor, there are two four-light, one three-light, and one two-light stone mullioned windows, with the four-light window at the east end originally having six lights before the restoration. The ground floor includes two four-light and one six-light stone mullioned windows, along with a door featuring a monolithic depressed arch. The ground floor windows have hoodmoulds, and the mullions are of tapering section. At the rear, there are two gables that may be original, alongside one timber-framed gable that is not original.
