Description

This is a row of eight shops located at Market Place, built around 1875. The buildings feature ashlar facades with slate roofs and nine gable stacks, rising to three storeys. They are situated on a curved and sloping site, with varied facades arranged in a pattern of A.A.B.B.B.C.D.C. Notable architectural details include impost bands, upper floor cill bands, and bracketed eaves, with plain sash windows throughout.

Shop number 1 has an original pilaster shop front with console brackets, while shop number 3 features a 20th-century shop front. Each facade above these shops has two pairs of segment-headed sashes, with two single similar sashes above. Shop number 2 retains an original 19th-century shop front, with two sashes on each floor; the first-floor sashes are in round-headed surrounds, and those above are segment-headed with carved keystones.

Shop number 4 has an altered shop front, with a triple round-headed sash above, featuring a larger central sash with a prominent keystone, and two pairs of round-headed sashes with gable heads above. Shops 6 and 7 have altered shop fronts with a central doorway, above which is a triple round-headed sash, followed by two pairs of sashes with faceted heads, and a round-headed dormer above.

Shops 9 and 10, as well as 11 and 12, also have altered shop fronts; however, shops 11 and 12 feature a pilaster surround with a side door. Above these shops is a round-headed triple sash, with a larger central sash adorned with carved capitals and a band, and a triple segment-headed sash with an elaborate central keystone. Shop numbers 9 and 10 include a gabled dormer window.
