Description

The building at 42-46 Townend is probably of 17th-century origin. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a pitched stone slate roof, and has coped gable ends with cut kneelers. The building is two storeys and has attics. A moulded string runs at first-floor level on the east side. Most windows are stone mullioned, with some later examples featuring square-sectioned mullions. The east elevation contains a three-light mullioned window on the ground floor, a four-light mullioned window on the first floor, and a three-light mullioned window in the attic. The doorway has a four-centred arched head and a 19th-century door with six moulded panels.

The north elevation features a single-storey extension with a stone slate lean-to roof, containing a three-light and a two-light stone mullioned window, and a four-light stone mullioned window on the ground floor. The west elevation has a two-light stone mullioned window on each floor. The south elevation features a three-light and a seven-light stone mullioned sash window on the first floor, and a five-light stone mullioned sash window on the ground floor, with two mullions having been removed.

Number 46 is a rendered extension from the 18th century, with an eight-light stone mullioned sash window on the first floor and a five-light stone mullioned sash window on the ground floor.
