Description

Somerville is a mid-19th century building located on Hungerford Road. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a hipped slate roof. The building has two storeys and is characterized by a bracketed eaves cornice and a moulded string course.

The façade consists of three ranges of sash windows, with the left range slightly projecting and topped by a gable that has moulded coping and a finial. On the ground floor, there is a canted bay with round-arched casements; the central casement has two arches with an intervening pendant. This bay is supported by clustered fluted colonnettes at the piers, and it features a moulded cornice and an openwork parapet with applied cylindrical piers and a moulded cornice.

The first floor includes a Venetian window with a moulded surround and sculpted cresting. The central range has a door with four moulded panels and a semi-circular fanlight in a moulded surround. The porch is supported by four columns and features a semi-circular arch with a mask in full relief on the keystone, along with elaborate foliage sculpture in the spandrels and a semi-circular pediment with further foliage sculpture in the tympanum.

The steps leading to the porch have quadrant retaining walls and gadrooned urns. The first floor also has a round-arched window in a moulded frame, with tracery made up of two intersecting semi-circles and a pendant boss at the junction. The right-hand range features a Venetian casement in a cable moulded surround with sculpted cresting, along with a first-floor sash window in a moulded surround. The north side of the building is similar, with one canted bay like that on the east front.
