Description
Walton Cross, located 100 yards north of Walton Cross Farmhouse, is a Grade II* listed structure believed to date from the 11th century. It features a massive gritstone base that is rectangular and tapers upwards, with a large, well-cut socket at the top for a shaft. The cross is ornamented on all four sides: two sides display thin interlace patterns, one side has a roundel with interlace and two confronted beasts below it, and the fourth side is adorned with a scroll and four birds set within a double frame of interlace. The history of the cross remains uncertain.
