Description
The barn, dated 1693, is constructed from dressed coursed rubble with large stone quoins, and has a stone slate roof. The plan consists of four bays, set back at one end, with a single-storey extension to the rear.
The east front has three bays, with a fourth bay stepped back. A tall cart entrance with an arched top is located to the left of the main front, featuring two pitching eyes on the upper level; the left one is blocked, while the right has a wooden shutter. There is a partially blocked single entrance to the centre and an enlarged double-doored entrance to the right. A date stone marked 1693 with the initials ACR forms one of the large quoins on the right-hand corner, adjoining the road. To the left, in the recessed bay, is a door and window with stone dressings. Ventilation slits are spaced below the eaves. The rear elevation features a single-storey extension with a pitched roof and an end chimney stack. The extension includes an arched window with stone dressings in the gable end, an entrance on the left side, and a 10/10 pane unhorned vertical sash window. The roadside gable end of the barn has two ground floor windows inserted and a further pitching eye above.
The interior has Queen strut trusses of 19th-century origin, with some earlier purlins. The interior of the single-storey extension was not inspected.
The barn is designated at Grade II for being a largely unaltered example of a late 17th-century barn, showcasing features of regional agricultural building development in West Yorkshire, including circular pitching windows and an unaltered cart entrance. The dated quoin of 1693 is also notable. The attached building to the rear is of interest as evidence of earlier living patterns on the farmstead.
