Description
Westgate House is a mid-19th century building located on the south side of Westgate. The rear is constructed of ashlar stone, while the front was rebuilt in 1923 by Pascal J. Stienlet from Newcastle. The building is steel framed and features bronze cladding. It has four storeys, with an eaves entablature that includes a deeply projecting cornice and frieze, displaying the name "Westgate House" in sans-serif lettering. The shopfront is notable for its prismatic glass that mirrors the structural members and wooden glazing bars. There are two very shallow canted oriels with glazing bars that extend through the upper three storeys on both the north and east fronts. The spaces between the windows are decorated with moulded panels, cartouches, and small applied Ionic columns. Additionally, there is a range of mid-19th century sash windows with moulded heads facing Chancery Lane.
