Description
A mid-19th century building located on St George's Square, forming a single composition with numbers 8 and 10 Railway Street. The building is constructed of ashlar and has a hipped slate roof. It comprises four storeys and a basement, with a deeply moulded eaves cornice featuring modillions. Continuous moulded sill bands are present on the second and third floors, with a plain band above the ground floor. A continuous moulded impost band sits below the ground floor windows, with the ground floor itself being horizontally rusticated. Moulded plinth and vermiculated quoins are also present. There are twelve window ranges. The ground floor windows are round-arched, featuring vermiculated keystones. The first floor windows have moulded surrounds, gadrooned keystones, frames with pulvinated friezes and triangular pediments, and balustrades on consoles with vase-shaped balusters. Above the pediments, two triglyph-like consoles link them to the sills of the second-floor windows, which themselves have moulded surrounds and cornices. The third-floor windows are separated by sunk and moulded panels and have plain pilasters with brackets supporting the cornices. Cast iron railings with baluster finials are located on the areas. The St George’s Street elevation is a simplified version of the St George’s Square facade, containing twelve window ranges, one of which is blind.
