Description

The Church of St Paul is a Commissioners' Church built in the Lancet style between 1829 and 1830 by Peter Atkinson Jr. A chancel was added in 1892, and the roof was reconstructed in 1870 by Eli Milnes of Bradford. The church is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof with an ashlar parapet. It has a square west tower topped with a slender ribbed octagonal stone spire. The five-bay nave is supported by bold buttresses, and the chancel is short. The tall nave windows are two-light with traceried heads set in deep moulded reveals, while the east window is four-light with geometrical tracery. The hood moulds above the windows have mask-like figure head stops. The three-tier square tower has reducing angle buttresses and a slender west lancet, with a round clock surround in diamond shape above it. Each side of the tower features a single light louvred bell chamber opening, and there is a crenellated parapet on moulded corbel brackets. A doorway is located on the south side of the tower.

Inside, there is a chancel screen made of carved oak from 1921, which includes shields with the names of those who fell in the First World War and a brass plate for those who fell in the Second World War. To the left is the organ, and to the right is the Lady Chapel. The church formerly had a gallery at the rear, and the roof features exposed lattice-type trusses with colonnettes.
