Description

This is a grave slab from 1818, located about 10 yards east of the church in Kirkheaton. It has recently been raised on a low stone plinth. The stone is inscribed in memory of seventeen children whose remains are interred here, who tragically lost their lives in a fire at the cotton mill owned by Mr. Thomas Atkinson at Colne Bridge on February 14, 1818. The inscription explains that the fire was caused when a boy was sent into the lower room with a naked light. The names of the victims, aged between 9 and 18 years, along with their parents' names, are also listed on the slab.
