Description

Armitage Bridge House is an early to mid 19th-century building located on Armitage Road. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a hipped slate roof, standing two storeys tall. The building has a moulded eaves cornice and a blocking course, along with a first-floor sill band. There are five ranges of sash windows with glazing bars, with the central window slightly projecting forward.

At the front, there is a one-storey porch that projects, supported by two fluted Ionic columns and topped with a full entablature and blocking course. To the west, there is a one-storey wing that also has a moulded cornice and blocking course. The lower two-storey wing to the east contains three ranges of sash windows. Further east, there is an extension that is one storey high, featuring a three-bay arcaded basement that serves as a cart shed for the stable yard. This extension has a moulded eaves cornice, a blocking course, one sash window, and one tripartite sash window.

At the rear, there are two conservatories with wooden glazing bars, one at each end. Although the rear elevation is plain, it presents a particularly fine view from a distance, looking down the Holme Valley.

Inside, despite being in a dilapidated state, the house showcases fine early 19th-century interior decoration, including neo-classical plaster cornices and wooden door surrounds. The two best rooms are located in the southeast and southwest corners of the ground floor. Both rooms feature shallow segmental vaults, with the southeast room having a quadripartite vault adorned with ribs and an anthemion centerpiece. This room also includes shallow recesses on each side, framed by two pilasters with anthemion-ornamented capitals and roundels on the entablature. It boasts a marble chimneypiece supported by two free-standing fluted Greek Doric columns. The hall features a two-bay arcade with fluted Tuscan columns and moulded voussoirs. A late 19th-century staircase with elaborate wooden balusters is also present, and a room in the west wing has a coved plaster ceiling.
