Description

The Holme, Holmfirth and Newmill Memorial Cross stands on a raised platform in front of Holme Valley Memorial Hospital, within the hospital gardens. It serves as a focal point for the approach to the hospital from the main road to the south-east. A garden path leads to stone steps which ascend to the memorial, through a gap in the curved stone retaining wall that defines the platform's edge; paths flank the platform and connect to the rear wall, also providing access.

The memorial cross is constructed from granite and comprises a budded Latin cross set upon an octagonal shaft with a moulded base. A carved stone wreath is draped over the arms of the cross, and a carved sword in relief appears on the front face. The shaft rises from a stepped, octagonal plinth. An inscription on the front of the plinth reads "REMEMBER." The plinth sits upon a shallow, octagonal base.

Behind the cross, a retaining wall of York stone defines the rear of the platform, featuring a balustrade. Stone steps at each end of the wall lead up from the platform to the hospital terrace above. A central projection in the wall, topped by a pediment with a broken cornice, holds a granite panel bearing a lengthy dedication: "IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THESE, OUR SONS, WHO DIED FOR ENGLAND IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 THE PEOPLE OF HOLME, HOLMFIRTH, AND NEWMILL HAVE ERECTED THIS MONUMENT & HOSPITAL A.D. 1920./ + / OH ENGLAND, SOMETIMES THINK OF THEM, AS ONCE THEY THOUGHT OF YOU." A carved granite coronet is set into the pediment above the panel. To the left of the panel is a wreath carved in relief and encircling the date 1914; to the right, a similar wreath encircles 1919. Both wreaths are carved from granite.

Granite panels set into the wall record the names of those commemorated with inscriptions carved in black-painted metal letters. The panels document losses from two conflicts: “HOLME VALLEY 1939 – 45 (50 NAMES)”, “HOLM AND HOLMEBRIDGE (51 NAMES)”, “(11 NAMES) UNDERBANK/ 30 NAMES CARTWORTH (8 NAMES)”, “HOLMFIRTH (50 NAMES)”, “UPPERTHONG (25 NAMES)/ WOOLDALE (25 NAMES)”, “NETHERTHONG & THONGSBRIDGE (30 NAMES)/ FULSTONE 20 NAMES”, “(12 NAMES) HEPWORTH & SCHOLES (22 NAMES)/ HADE EDGE 16 NAMES”, and “HOLME VALLEY 1939 – 45 (50 NAMES)”.
