Description
Netherthong Wesleyan Methodist Chapel is a disused chapel built in 1769. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with rusticated quoins and features a string course. The stone slate roof has gable copings on moulded kneelers and moulded stone brackets, with a stone stack on the east and a later stack on the west. The building has two storeys, with one storey on the north side.
The south elevation displays a symmetrical facade with doorways on the left and right, each featuring six fielded panels and semi-circular fanlights with glazing bars. There are two tall, slender windows with semi-circular heads, glazing bars, keystones, and impost blocks, along with a small central semi-circular motif between the windows. High above, there are three single lights with glazing bars and semi-circular heads, also with keystones and impost blocks.
The north elevation is a single storey with a symmetrical facade, featuring entrances on the left and right, two small single lights with segmental false arches, and two single lights in the centre. The interior retains no original features. This chapel is noted as the earliest Methodist Chapel in the Kirklees area, where John Wesley preached in 1772.
